Watch Your Thoughts

Watch your thoughts, they become words.
Watch your words, they become actions.
Watch your actions, they become habits.
Watch your habits, they become your character.
Watch your character, it becomes your destiny.

Although I have not been able to find attribution for this poem it either derives from or is influenced by a similar observation by the ancient Chinese philosopher, Lao Tzu. It is also similar to wisdom taught in most of the great philosophical traditions.
There is profound truth in this formula. The same fundamental idea was written about by more modern writers including William James, the father of modern psychology, James Allen, Napoleon Hill and many others.
How often do we allow ourselves to think self-defeating thoughts or thoughts of jealousy, envy, resentment, insecurity, or pettiness? How often do we allow our thoughts to be negative or destructive? How often do we tell ourselves we cannot succeed or that we are not responsible for our situation?
Each time we have such destructive thoughts we lead ourselves down a path of defeat and alienation. We deny ourselves the potential for success and for growth as a human being.
We build our own characters based on our habits. We build our habits through repetitive actions. We act based on what we tell ourselves about ourselves and about others. The more negative those thoughts are the more negative our path is.
Take control of your life and your destiny by controlling your thoughts. Purge the negative and defeating thoughts. Embrace thoughts that build yourself and others up and you lead yourself toward greater things.
Place a copy of this wonderful poem someplace where you will see it every day to remind yourself of its power. Watch your thoughts and correct them when they are counterproductive.
You will find over time that your thinking and all that flows from it will improve and your life will improve as a result. Try it – I guarantee it will make a difference in your life.
Watch your thoughts.
