Take Time Out

I have been absent from the blog for nearly a month. I do not usually discuss my personal affairs here because that is not the purpose of this blog – the purpose is to being you information useful to you.

Life has a way of overrunning our best intentions and plans from time to time and there is something to be learned from that as well. On November 14th we lost our beautiful daughter in a tragic automobile accident. We have spent weeks mourning her loss and trying to find some meaning in it. I took some time away from this blog and other activities to focus on my family and my own feelings.

While the sadness and loss has not gone away it is time for me to return to my work here. I learned two lessons from this – or rather was reminded of two important lessons.

First, we never really appreciate the people in our lives enough until we lose them. We just take for granted that they will be here tomorrow and that we will be here tomorrow. The loss of a dear member of our family reminds us how important we all are to one another and how we ought not ever take that for granted. We are never guaranteed a tomorrow, so we need to make the best of today.

Second, it is very important from time to time to take some time out. Whether it is a family crisis, a personal crisis or just a significant change in our lives, it is important to take some time for ourselves. Life is not just about planning and doing and seeking to achieve for tomorrow. Life is about living today and making the best of what we have.

It is a balance to be sure. The wise man always thinks about tomorrow and plans accordingly. But we must not forget to enjoy and experience today in our rush to plan for tomorrow.

Remember always to take care of yourself and your loved ones. Do not allow your work overtake those important things. When you need time out take it.
