In Praise of Amateurs – Saving by Doing

Hand Made is a book out this month by Mark Frauenfelder. We have not seen the book yet – it is that new – but from a review done by JD Roth at his Get Rich Slowly website you can get a sense of what the book will be about. Roth does tend to digress and wander all over the place on this subject but if you are the least interested in DIY as a way to not only save money but also develop your own skills it is worth reading. Roth plugs a few other books and websites on this subject of developing one’s skills to do things yourself instead of buying everything ready made.

If you are too busy to build your own food dryer or TV cabinet or whatever else you need then buying may make sense. If you like to fiddle in the garage with tools however and have the time do it yourself projects can save you a lot of money.

Creating true wealth is about more than making money – it can be about saving money as well. Remember Benjamin Franklin’s wise advice: A penny saved is a penny earned.
