In Memory of William R. Thomas, Esq

William R ThomasOn August 6th the world lost one of those remarkable and unique decent people. Bill Thomas was a “country lawyer” as he is now being described. He practiced law from 1943 to 2011 when he retired. Those 67 years of professional service to his community were always exemplary.

Bill Thomas was a community leader throughout his life. He was a quiet and humble man but a man who insisted upon integrity and truth. He helped found the Lebanon Community Hospital where I was born.

While I was in law school I clerked for Mr. Thomas – to me he will always be Mr. Thomas. After I passed the bar my law practice was across the street from Mr. Thomas’ office and we would go have a cup of coffee most mornings. He taught me a lot about the law and about the practice of law. But what he taught me most was how to an honorable lawyer and a decent man.

Mr. Thomas loved his family and his community and he showed it. He took an interest in young people, especially young attorneys. He was a wonderful mentor to me and many others.

There is nothing better that can be said about a man than he was honorable and decent. That he treated everyone with respect and courtesy. That is exactly what is said about Bill Thomas and that is what I will always remember about him.
