How Can Anyone Be Bored?

From time to time I will hear someone say they are bored and I find myself completely astonished. How can anyone with a mind be bored?

In the April issue of Success Magazine actor Dustin Hoffman is quoted: “There’s a rebirth that goes on with us continuously as human beings. I don’t understand, personally, how you can be bored. I can understand how you can be depressed, but I just don’t understand boredom”.

I agree with Hoffman. How can any person with a mind be bored? I once read that Harry Truman made that same observation – something to the effect that if you can think you cannot possibly ever be bored.

There is so much to read, so much to learn, so much to observe in this world. There is always so much to be done, so much to improve upon, so much to create.

Like Hoffman I can understand people being depressed. I can understand people feeling hopeless. I cannot understand anyone being bored.
The only way I can understand boredom is in terms of profound laziness. One must be very lazy to be bored – to have nothing to think about or nothing to do in this world.
If you do find yourself feeling bored I suggest you ask yourself what needs to be done. Ask yourself what needs to be improved in this world and why you are not thinking and acting on how to improve it.
Only when there is nothing left to learn, nothing left to do and nothing left to possibly improve in the world can I imagine anyone being bored.
