Financial Education – when, where and how?

What do you think?

April Dykman recently wrote a good article on Financial Literacy on the GetRichSlowly blog. She raises a good question. How do we teach large numbers of people to be financially knowledgeable enough to succeed?

As she points out teaching financial basics in high school has not been shown to be very effective. It is not “sticky”, that is the kids do not retain it. They do not feel a vested interest in it. After all for most of them Mom and Dad pay for everything, why should they care about compound interest and retirement savings?

She then discusses one program for foster children that she thinks might be different.

I do not have the answer on this. I would like to know what my readers think…. what do you think? How do we prepare young people for financial success?
