Fear – Just a Chemical?

A recent post on the Mr. Money Mustache blog Fear is Just a Chemical raises some interesting questions about fear and also teaches a valuable lesson on how to over come it.

When thinking about our fears it is important to remember that fear has a purpose. It is an evolutionary survival tool. Whether it was an early hominid encountering a large predatory saber tooth tiger or a modern man encountering an armed bank robber – fear plays an important role in our survival. Fear grabs our attention and makes us focus on the immediate challenge to insure that we do what we have to do to survive.

That kind of fear – the fear of genuine threats to our life, is a very rational fear. While we have to overcome that fear sufficiently to act to protect ourselves, we do not want to ignore it.

There is another fear though – it is the irrational fear of things that will not kill us or even inflict significant pain but we are still afraid. The phobias are good examples of this: fear of spiders, fear of heights, fear of water, etc. All these things can hurt you, but they are easily dealt with in most situations. There is no reason to be paralyzed with fear for most of these things.

One of the biggest barriers to success is fear – people often will not take a chance on a new investment, a business idea or any number of things that could lead to success because they are afraid of failure. This kind of fear is self-defeating.

It is certainly true that fear, in one sense, is merely a chemical – a bio-chemical reaction to stimuli. But to be intelligent about fear one must take a hard look at it. If the fear rational or irrational? Is your fear saving you from death or is it depriving you of opportunity. When it is denying you opportunity it is time to think about how to overcome it.

Read Fear is Just a Chemical and let us know what you think – thanks.
