If you believe in yourself you open the door to the possible. If you do not believe in yourself you close the door to your own potential.
People who believe in themselves have an enormous advantage over those who are plagued by self doubt. You are a unique being with your own talents, abilities and amazing potential. The limits on what you can achieve are largely self imposed.
Stop for just a moment and consider this truth. Your attitude about yourself is part of your attitude for success. No matter what you seek to achieve, your attitude is a vital part of that success. Your attitude about yourself, your potential, your ability, your unique capacity to achieve, will in large part set the limits on what you do achieve.
Professional athletes and their coaches know this. That is why athletic coaches spend so much time working on attitude and team spirit. They know that while the game’s fundamentals and physical conditioning is essential to success so is the correct mental state. They know that the team must believe in itself and believe it will win. Each member of the team must believe likewise, or the team does not.
Henry Ford said he was looking for a lot of men who have an infinite capacity to not know what cannot be done. Ford wanted men who only believed in the possible. He wanted men who believed in themselves. He had learned that this is a fundamentally necessary to success.
Other people are going to tell you that you cannot achieve what you seek to achieve. They will tell you that you do not have the ability, the potential, the skill, the drive. If you listen to them you will not. You will fail.
Do not listen to naysayers. Do not listen to those who do not believe in you. Listen to yourself and tell yourself that you will succeed and you will achieve what you set out to do. It takes planning and learning and incredible persistence and often hard work – but you can do what you set out to do if you believe in yourself.
Remember what Venus Williams, Olympic gold medalist and professional tennis champion said: You have to believe in yourself when no one else does, that is what makes you a winner.
Believe in yourself. Give yourself that gift. Most of the men and women throughout time who have accomplished what they set out to do have believed in themselves even when others did not.
Give yourself the gift of success – believe in yourself.
If you are having doubts about your own abilities and potential follow these steps to strengthen your belief in yourself:
1. Constantly read about others who have overcome challenges and barriers to succeed despite the doubt of others. You can learn a lot about the capacity of self belief and the human spirit by watching others succeed.
2. Focus on a small goal and put all your effort into it. Once you have accomplished the small goal you will feel more confident in your ability to achieve and you can move on to a greater challenge.
3. Keep track of your challenges, your successes and the lessons learned from temporary setbacks in a journal and review it often. This will strengthen your own understanding of how belief in yourself works.
4. You will have setbacks. They are not failures. Failure is permanent. Set backs are temporary and can be overcome in time. Learn from them, but do not permit them to overcome you.
Keep moving forward and keep a record of your success. Build upon it and you will believe you are capable of more than you may now imagine.
